Israeli Soldiers Playing Cards, 1997, Collier Schorr

Group Exhibition: Composed: Identity, Politics, Sex, The Jewish Museum, 1109 5th Avenue at 92nd Street, through June 30.

An exhibition of photo-based works by seven contemporary artists examines national, ethnic and sexual identities.  Selections from Debbie Grossman’s My Pie Town re-envision Russel Lee’s iconic Depression-era photographs of a community in the American West as a fictitious parallel reality populated exclusively by women. Collier Schorr questions notions of identity through a staged photograph of androgynous German youth dressed as Israeli soldiers, and Rona Yefman portrays an elderly Holocaust survivor performing in drag in front of a Warhol painting in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Group Exhibition: Everything That Rises Must Converge, Hart Gallery, 950 Hart Street, No. 103, Bushwick, Brooklyn, weekends only or by appointment through April 29.

Hart Gallery presents a group exhibition of work by six photographers who explores the character of  their own neighborhoods. These photographers create narratives about what exists in their immediate communities, such as Irina Rozovky’s series of painterly photographs, In Plain Air, which captures the multi-ethnic inhabitants of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park experiencing family unions, social gatherings, romantic trysts or tranquil moments alone at resonant times of day bathed in the beauty of natural light. Other participating photographers include Heyward Hart, Michael Lopez, RaMell Ross, Trevor Powers and Andrew Laumann.

Interactive Performance: Brunch N’Jam, The Art Pop Up Shop, 672 Driggs, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, April 21, 2 – 6pm.

The public is invited to enact their rock star fantasies with Amanda Keely’s installation, Action Symphony, at the Art Pop Up Shop in Williamburg on Saturday, April 21st.  Also on view is a current exhibition of work by Mika Azegami, Thomas Brodin and Joe Caswell.  Refreshments and small bites will be served by charcutier Herve Katz.
