Gary Lichtenstein Editions at Mana presents:
The Painters and the Printer
October 15–December 31, 2017
Originally a profitable industrial technology, silkscreen printing was adopted by artists well before the 20th century. Although credit is generally given to Andy Warhol for popularizing the medium as an artistic technique, hundreds of artists were embracing silkscreen right around the same time, including Charles Hinman, Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, and Robert Rauschenberg.
The Painters and the Printer is a showcase of silkscreen works produced in collaboration with Master Printer, Gary Lichtenstein. The installation features a variety of different methods and applications, focusing on the versatility of silkscreen and the different ways in which artists choose to use the medium.
Richard Meier’s newest works, for instance, were created predominantly with encaustic paint, yet elements of his silkscreen prints appear throughout. Cey Adams chose to use silkscreen as a painting technique and, as a result, all of his collages are different from one another. The color fields within Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen’s kaleidoscopic cut paper pieces have been achieved with silkscreen. And although Janette Beckman did not envision picking up a paintbrush when she began working with Gary, she has since discovered the beauty of hand embellishment.
Over the course of his remarkable forty-five-year career, Gary Lichtenstein has produced and published a wide range of silkscreen editions and multiples with over 100 artists. Richard Klein, Exhibitions Director of the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, has remarked: “It is Lichtenstein’s innate ability as a colorist, together with his belief in spontaneity and accepting what others would consider accidents or mistakes, which has defined his studio. The majority of printers merely try to duplicate what the artist wants to see, but Lichtenstein loves to show the artist what they have never seen before, intimately participating with them in the creative process.”
