Chicago Humanities Festival Presents: Aram Han Sifuentes: Stitching a Citizen at Mana Contemporary Chicago

One of the many requirements to becoming an American citizen is the ability to pass an exam. Chicago artist Aram Han Sifuentes became interested in the questions on the US Naturalization Test and what they communicate about American ideals of citizenship. To get a conversation started, she employs a unique educational tool: the needlework samplers popular among young women in colonial America. Han has undertaken the project of stitching every question on the test (and her answers) and has invited hundreds of citizens and non-citizens alike to create personalized samplers. Contribute to Han’s US Citizenship Test Sampler, and receive a lesson in old-fashioned sampler stitching!
The annual Richard Gray Visual Art Series recognizes a significant gift from founding CHF board member and distinguished art dealer Richard Gray.
