Born in China’s Hunan province, Shen Wei spent his childhood studying Chinese opera, traditional Chinese ink painting, and calligraphy. In 1991 he became a founding member of the Guangdong Dance Academy in China, the country’s first modern dance company. He founded Shen Wei Dance Arts in New York in 2000; he often designs the sets and costumes for his dancers. In addition to his work as a choreographer, dancer, and director, Shen Wei is also an accomplished painter who has had solo exhibitions in New York and Hong Kong. His work as a visual artist and choreographer has been presented in site-specific installations and performances at renowned institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum, North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
